One of the best kept secrets in the 2018 class in Wisconsin, Slinger (Wis.) 2018 forward Derek Sabin received his first scholarship offer last week. Beating the competition to the punch, Green Bay was first to pull the trigger on the skilled, versatile junior.

“It was really exciting,” Sabin told NY2LASPORTS.COM. “I started building a relationship with them a while ago. Now it happened, it’s just a big relief. It’s good to know the first one is out of the way.  They think I really fit well into their style of play. They like versatile bigs. They like that I’m a high academic kid too.”

Sabin is picking up interest from South Dakota, North Dakota, IUPUI, North Dakota State, Milwaukee, Drake, William & Mary, South Dakota State, Northern Iowa, Western Illinois, and Loyola (IL). The 6-foot-8, 220-pound may not have to wait much longer for his next offer.

“I think Milwaukee is pretty serious,” Sabin said. “North Dakota State is up there too. I’ve had a lot of contact with Drake. South Dakota is really starting to come into the mix hard too.  A lot of them are saying they’re right at that point of offering. They’d really like to see how I do this winter with my school team. They’re all very excited about my potential.”

Sabin has no future visits scheduled for the rest of the fall. When choosing his next home, Sabin will examine academics and style of play.  “I’m looking for a school that won’t stick me in a spot that’s all in the post,” he said. “I want to utilize all my abilities. Then a place that matches my interest in academics.”

Sabin plays for the Wisconsin Shooters during the travel season.
